FlyLady's FlyToon

FLYing Habits - Part 3

Have you picked a new habit to practice for the month of March?
FlyLady asked for you to send in your new habits and here they are!!

  • Hello Flycrew...
I know I should have already had this "new habit" in the bag, but I love to be bare foot all of the time and really have a hard time wearing shoes all day. I know that wearing shoes makes sense. Last week the phone rang and it was the school wanting me to go down and pick up my ds because he was sick and no I did not have my shoes on. There was choas right away because not only did I have to find socks and my shoes for myself but for my other dd and ds. I am excited to work on this new habit because I know it is the best thing for me and my family, everthing I have learned from all of you has been life changing and I will keep working everyday to fly. Thanks for everything a flybaby in Washington.

  • Hello FlyCrew...
My February habit is going to be reading my Bible for at least 15 minutes a day, so I can keep my spirit renewed and keep my attitude toward housekeeping a thankful attitude. Instead of being a martyr and a whiner, I can read my Bible which reminds me to be thankful for my home rather than disgusted with it. It keeps me from sinking into all or nothing thinking and perfectionism. With God breezes, I can keep my attitude peaceful!! This will give me the peace to not have to think I need to be cleaning every minute of every day. :-)

  • My habits are not all that bad. I have always made beds, clean kitchens and bathrooms etc. Hot Spots....yes (lots), but in unseen areas.....but PROCRASTINATION is the mother of all sinning. Flying is so difficult when the motor is sluggish, or missing.

That will be ongoing till I give up the ghost.

  • Dear Flycrew,
I am going to move a minimum of 15 minutes each day. I really need it and when the weather and allergy index allows, my darling dog will benefit too. Thanks for all you do to encourage us to change for the better and for ourselves!

  • I decided that since our new month is Feb. and it is the month of love, my new habit for the month is that I am going to tell myself every day that I love me and I am a good person. Like you say, we get so caught up not having things "perfect" and we continually berate ourselves when something doesn't go "right". If I catch myself putting myself down, I will yell, "Stop! I love you anyway!" When someone else gives me a putdown, I am going to respond, "You are entitled to feel any way you choose, but I choose to love myself."

    Thanks for all you do,

  • I'm going to work on making my bed every morning.

  • Hi Marla & Crew,
The new habit I am going to work on for February is taking my vitamin & calcium supplements. I don't eat or drink much dairy and now that I'm getting older I'm concerned about my bone strength. I don't eat or sleep properly either so I'm sure that also affects my energy level and how I feel every day. Hopefully, the vitamins will help as a start and then I can work on the others. Thanks for the gentle nudge!

  • Shining my "sink" at work, AKA clearing my desk at the end of the day.
This means I have tomorrow to get rid of the piles.

    Thanks for everything

  • This month I am going to do something that I read on Flylady's little memo calendar: REPLACE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS WITH POSITIVE ACTIONS.

  • Hi Flycrew,
Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas and suggestions you send out each day. I joined right before Thanksgiving, and even though I still have so far to go, I'm making great progress. We have to list our house for sale this month, so I have added incentive to get things under control. My sink is shiny, my laundry caught up which both were always downfalls for me, and I make more time for fun with my two little girls, 4 and 1. Now we go to the children's museum at least once a week, regularly attend playgroup and are actually on time for my 4 year olds preschool 2 days a week and dance class. My habit for this month is to use my treadmill each day for a minimum of 15 minutes. Exercise always gets pushed aside, my excuse that I don't have time. I cannot make that excuse anymore because you have told me that I have to make time for myself. I've heard that it only takes 30 days to create a new habit, so this is it, my month to establish exercise as a regular part of my day. Thanks so much again for all you do. I feel better about myself than I have in a long long time!

  • Hi,
Thank you for all that a shiny sink, routines, and decluttering for 15 minutes a day is doing for me; these little habits are helping me find myself after being buried for so many years.
My new habit which I will work on this month is filing and paper work - 15 minutes at a time!! I'm drowning in papers right now and tax information waiting to be gathered too. So this month I will work on it a little each day using my timer (I can do anything for 15 minutes right!).

  • After having knee surgery in November 2004 and during the Christmas period I have gained some kilos. So my new habit for February (which started late January) is to eat healthy with lots of raw fruit and vegies, juicing and regular exercise. I have started swimming (it's Summertime in Australia) and riding my exercise bike regularly and feeling much better, with more energy. Looking forward to great year.

  • Exercising a half hour every day and drinking 6 glasses of water.

  • Dear FlyLady & Crew,
My new habit for February (which, in Australia, coincides with the new school year) is to get up early enough in the morning to have myself organised before my girls are up. Getting myself showered, dressed, breakfasted etc whilst nagging at them to hurry does not work well. If I've already at least showered and dressed, I'm able to keep an eye on them whilst they have breakfast, and they're less likely to get distracted and waste precious before school time.

Of course, I've know this for a while. Now I'm going to actually do it!

  • I have a new group of women to go walking with, Monday, wed and fridays at 5:30 am. I want to do it for a month and see what it feels like.

  • Do my 15 minute Pilates routine every day.

  • Mine is an old habit that died a while ago. To make sure every member of the family gets a hug or kiss when getting up and coming or going from the house. I have 6 to hand out to, I expect some will be recipricated some may respond by rolling eyes but I can't wait to get started! ;)

  • Dearest Flylady
In December my new habit was moving my body just 15 minutes 4 times a week - it now gets moved 1 hour, 4-5 times a week! (I know! I can hardly believe it myself!) In January my new habit was to lose the control freak inside me - I am learning (albeit slowly!) by pulling myself up every time I see that monster! In February my new habit is to begin weekly date nights with my wonderful DH of 10 years. This stopped near 2 years ago and I miss them!

Love to you all, thanks for reminding us of baby steps.

  • As a new flybaby, I'm going to keep shining my sink (two weeks now), and tomorrow morning add making my bed. I'm starting very slow, and I think it will stick. Thanks, FlyCrew!

  • I PROMISE TO DO ONE LOAD OF LAUNDRY EACH DAY.

  • For February, I'm going to walk during one of the 2 coffee breaks I get at work. I dearly need the exercise, and it's something I've been meaning to do, but never seem to get around to doing.... I have the little stars for my calendar, too, but I'll put them on my calendar at work, since it's a work habit I'm working on. ;-)

  • I actually have been working on this for a week or two -- writing every day.
I read a lot, I can easily talk a lot (lol) but have always avoided writing and when I went to school you didn't have to do all that much of it.
So now I'm taking an on-line university class and I have to post my comments on a discussion board. It was so hard. It made me realize that I avoid writing letters and emailing and posting to the board for all the same reasons -- it takes too long because I'm too picky!!
So I decided I will write something even if its only a bit each day.

  • I am a very new FlyBaby, but I am determined. Luckily, I have had the bed making thing down since I was in grade school. And as for sink shining, my Mother and I take turns (whoever leaves the house last). So my new habit is - I am going to work at my desk (located in a corner of my bedroom). From now on, it will be a workstation, not a-dumping area. It has been decluttered, there are no excuses. I am a student, for heavens' sake, and beds are for sleeping in and one other activity NOT for studying.

  • I'm going to try to turn my computer off at 8:30pm so that I can wind down and go to bed at a decent hour.

  • I will force myself to be in bed before midnight...EVERY night (except Friday dage night) for the month of February.

  • Getting my clothes, Purse, jewelry, underwear, etc. laid out the night before, so mornings will be smoother. I might even try the whole week thing on a rack on the back of the bedroom door....

  • I know this might sound strange and maybe a little bad, but my new habit for the month of February will be to have a shower everyday.
I tend to put myself last and forget to have one, and this can happen three of four times a week.

No more, I am worth stopping things to have my shower.

  • MY NEW HABIT FOR "FEBRUARY" IS TO GET A HAND ON ALL OF MY READING MATERIALS. GET RID OF ALL MY OLD MAGAZINES. I KEEP A "LARGE" BASKET FULL OF MAGAZINES IN MY FAMILY ROOM. I HAVE A COUPLE OF STACKS IN MY SEWING ROOM. I EVEN HAVE SOME IN MY (HUSBANDS) GARAGE. I AM GOING TO MY DOCTOR OFFICE LATER IN THE WEEK AND I PLAN ON TAKING A STACK TO ALL THREE FLOORS. I ALSO AM GOING TO GET MY BOOKS IN MY BOOKCASE STRAIGHTENED, WHICH IS OVER FLOWING. I WILL GET RID OF SOME OF THE BOOKS, THAT I WILL PROBABLY NEVER READ. THEN I CAN PUT MY BOOKS IN SOME ORDER..YES THEY ARE ALL JUST SCRAMBLED TOGETHER, NO ORDER. THIS SHOULD KEEP ME QUIET BUSY, COME THE MONTH OF MARCH, MAYBE I CAN CATCH UP ON MY READING.
ENJOY READING IF I COULD SHIFT THROUGH THE CLUTTER.

  • I am a brand-new Flybaby, and I have been working on my sink for 2 days. Tomorrow I will finish it right to the shine. How timely!!!

  • I will put the newspapers out daily, whether I have read them or not. I will put the mail in appropriate places each day.

Thanks for reminders. And especially thank you for replacing the timer with no charge.

  • I am drinking 2 quarts of water a day. I don't know what the recommended amount is but this is a lot more than I was before and I think it's all I can handle right now. I will drink 1 quart before noon and the other after noon.

    You're terrific Flylady and everyone!

  • New habit for the month of February will be going to bed by 10 PM every week night.
Going to continue practicing "do it now" - I'm getting there, but it's not automatic yet.

Thanks for all of your help!

  • Wipe down the bathroom sinks, toilets and tub

  • Thanks to FlyLady and the FlyCrew, I have decluttered cigarettes. As of midnight January 30, I have not had a smoke for 10 days. It was in a great deal part of the FlyLady and Crew decluttering method that convinced me that the cigarettes had to go. I took full advantage of the FlyLady associated support group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/FLYingFreeSupport/

  • I'm going to wipe down my vanity countertop every morning.

  • Staying in touch: I am going to take 15 minutes per day to either write a note to a friend or relative, or make a phone call to someone I've been thinking about but have not called.

  • I AM GOING BACK TO DRINKING MY WATER EACH DAY. OH HOW MY BODY HAS MISSED THAT SINCE I FELL OFF THE WATER WAGON. THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT!

  • You have inspired me! I am going to stay on top of laundry this month!

  • To be on time or early EVERYWHERE I go.
I can be on time if I think it is important, but I have a habit of being lax if I think it's no big deal. In reality, it may be a big deal to someone else even if it isn't to me. So, I have decided that every "appointment" I make will be important enough to be on time, even if it is just to go grocery shopping with my sister.

  • YES! Shine that sink! I stilll haven't made it a real habit-- NO excuses--

  • I am going to do a five minute rescue every night before going to bed.

  • My office is a black hole. It has been my 'worst room' and the subject of my room rescues for months. I've finally found the floor and am almost done with the closet cleaning, but it still is a paper mill's dream. Every flat surface is covered in pieces of paper, notebooks, business cards and books. I make lists and then can't find the lists. So what did I do? I went out and bought bulletin boards to hang on the walls for my 'important papers' so I could find them. You guessed it. They are now so covered that I still can't find my lists or important papers, let alone have somewhere uncluttered to work!
So my new habit is a 5 minute paper purge. My goal is 30 pieces of paper thrown away or filed neatly for five minutes every day of the week for the month of February.

  • Hi Flylady & Fly Crew,
My new habit will be shining my sink!!! I have been trying to since January, but it hasn't been totally consistant. This month I want to keep my sink shining every day BEFORE I go to work (I work second shift and have a tendancy to come home & go to bed immediately)!

  • My new habit will be to walk on my new treadmill every day for at least 15 minutes, I get encouragement from you Marla. It will also make me feel better about my self.

  • sweep my kitchen floor every evening

  • Everyday, I look in the mirror and I think to myself, "Woman, you really need to do something about that!" "that" is my baby weight, which has been on me for a total of 4 1/2 years. I started working out at home last year, but then hubby came home and i went back to my old habit of not getting up as early as i needed to be able to do exercise, and since he was coming home for only 2 weeks i didn't think i should start a routine that involved him so I just stopped and got busy doing other stuff, like eating and sitting on my keister. Now, DH has gone off for another year and i have vowed to myself to make it a habit to get up early to exercise, get the kids enrolled in the day care center, and actually use the day care center and treat myself to a day or two a week without the kids and use a few of those days at the gym. DH won't be able to do much outside of work, so he has made the same commitment while he is gone. So in a year, hopefully, I'll be a fitter Flybaby. (Is fitter a word?? Oh well.)

  • I've decided to put an end to stinkin' thinkin' as I'm tired of the way it sucks the life out of me. With three small children to keep up with and constant sleep deprivation its easy to get sucked into a cycle of negative complaining but no more! I want to enjoy my family and be more positive about life.

  • My new habit is going to be getting up at a reasonable hour! I have been lazy so far this year and have been pushing the envelope on how late I can get up and still be out the door on time. Obviously, this gives me no time to complete my morning routine and makes for poor choices (like not bringing breakfast to work and stopping for fast food, etc).
So today I got up on time! I am yawning as I am not used to it but I am relishing the fact that I will now have time to get done with my morning routine and I will be out the door early!
In the spring, I'll use this time to walk outside.

  • Hello, FlyFolks!
My new habit is not a home habit, but a work habit. But, since I am a teacher, I do have a lot of work to do at home, so maybe this counts.
I want to work on the habit of having my lesson plans complete for the following week when I leave school on Friday.
This seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it? Well, the longer I've taught the less rigorous I've become about actually writing down my plans. And, when they stopped issuing us lesson plan books and collecting them, I really got bad about it.
I am an excellent teacher - very creative and thorough. And, I've been at it for 25 years, so most of the time, I really don't "need" them written down to get the job done. But, I have a student teacher this term who needs all the modeling he can get. He's working hard, but he's hardly the "natural" that I had in the fall.
I completed my lesson plans at my *cleared off* desk in the living room last night and felt a great sense of satisfaction and relief. I'm going to aim at having that feeling every week in February - and I'm going to try to have everything done by Friday so that the weekends are mine.
I might find that I need to reflect over the weekend, so I'm going to remain flexible about the Friday thing, but I definitely want to have them in my hands when I hit the room on Monday morning.

  • Dearest FLYlady and Crew,
my new habit shall be: quitting the martyrdom!
Your system works wonderful for me and my family but much too often I am doing the chores wondering why all these tasks have to fall into my lot. Of course, I am not very amiable in this mood.
Stop with the stinking thinking, I have chosen to nurture my family (including ALL tasks) and to help my children keeping their rooms tidy and neat, instead of complaining why they cannot do it perfectly on their own.

    Love
