FLYing Habits

Have you picked a new habit to practice for the month of March?
FlyLady asked for you to send in your new habits and here they are!!

  • I've finally gotten into my routines and it's funny, but I find myself doing them without thinking now. They're pretty much habit now, or at least almost are. There's one thing I would like to be a part of my evening routine that I haven't been able to get into the habit of doing. So, I've decided that I'll make this my new habit to achieve. :) I want to take a bubble bath and meditate every night. It's a way for me to relax my mind, my body, and my soul in one soothing step. I basically draw myself a nice hot bubble bath and then while I'm relaxing I do a little meditation. Nothing big. Just a way for me to connect with myself and with the Divine (by whatever name you use).

    *hugs*

  • I'm going to write in my notebook for just 15 minutes a day instead of whining that I have no time for my creative writing. When I've got that down, I'll work out what my next baby writing step should be.

  • I am so happy to have found out about Flylady. My whole life is so much better. What a huge blessing!!! My new habit-- I am going to start taking care of ME!! I will start riding my 'Health Rider' 15 min. per day and drinking my water -- starting Feb. 1. My 25th anniversary is in August and I would like to look more wonderful than I do right now. I have your calendar and I bought stars to put on it for each day that I accomplish my goal. I love all of the encouragement I get from you each day.

  • My new habit will be to keep my bed cleared off so that I can sleep in my whole bed and not just one side!

  • I am focusing on shining my sink even though it's been almost 4 years since I joined. The other "new" habit is how I interact with my children. We're re-learning the speak to them not at them idea. We watched Super Nanny and I was quite surprised that my child was on the show--just with a different face! That was a huge wake up call. Of course, the first thing Super Nanny did was emphasize how important routines are! Go Figure.

  • Dear Flylady,
I sat here thinking of what new habit I could possibly need to start...the Lord nailed me...I will start reading my Bible everyday even if for only 5 minutes. I dont have to make a major endeavor...just read.

    Thank you,

  • the new habit I'm planning on re-enforcing this week is the bedtime routine.

  • Last month, I was frantically trying to finish up a quilt for my quilt guild challenge, and for some reason, my machine kept breaking needles like crazy. I had to haul it in for service, and was reprimanded by my wonderful repairman that it was SO dirty inside. I have four cats who try to 'help' me by laying on the sewing machine table to keep me company. The reason that the machine was having so many mechanical problems was the amount of lint and cat hair inside the machine where there shouldn't have been any gunk. It was a very expensive repair, and the repairman told me that I really NEED to put a cover over my machine when I'm not working with it as a way of keeping extra lint and cat hair out of it.
So my new habit for February is to put the pretty quilted cover over the top of my machine when I turn it off.

  • My New Habit is to meditate every day..it makes such a difference when I do.

  • My new habit that I am working on, is to put dirty dishes directly into the dishwasher and wash pots and pans immediately after I use them.

  • Hi Marla and Crew, My new habit for February is going to be to cook dinner for DH and myself at least four times a week using Leanne's newest book "Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way". It's a great book and every recipe I've tried has been awesome. I just have difficulty taking care of myself and my eating habits are the first to go. So I resolve that I will make nice dinners at least four times a week all during February. :)

  • Thanks for the reminder. I have been very sporadic about getting to bed at a reasonable hour, even though I know that everything works well when I'm not tired, and nothing really goes right when I am tired. So February will be the month that I tackle this habit. Gotta go now or I won't be able to get to bed on time -

  • filing all financial paper/receipts daily in an accordian file for '05. I started with the file in Jan, but I was tossing the stuff in weekly or when ever the pile got to big. It only takes a few seconds.

  • My new habit is going to be making the bed and putting away clothes. I have always been a "leave-it-where-it-lies" kind of person but now that my sink and my stove are shiny, I am going to try "shining" my bed and seeing if that helps my bedroom the way it helped my kitchen. Thank you so much for your work.

  • I have let my morning routine slip a bit. I've been doing my swish & swipe, but I haven't been so diligent about making sure the kids are doing theirs, nor have I been putting the load of laundry in.

  • My habit I'd like to focus on is going through EACH item in my morning routine every morning.

  • Hi Flylady, I was just thinking about this habit thing over the weekend. I was saying to myself "why can't I get some routines established in my life?" Then I thought about what Flylady always says"just do babysteps and pick one thing to do and in 30 days it will be a habit. Well, mine is going to be to OPEN my control journal every morning. Even if I don't do what it says,at least I'll start flywashing my brain by opening it up and reading about some of the routines I would like to establish. I do shine my sink every day, so I have at least one routine down and I've been doing that for 5 months now.

Thanks so much for helping a homeschooling mom of 4 and a major, major SHE

  • I live with in-laws and therefore only have 2 bedrooms and a bathroom that are really my domain to speak of. So, my new habit is to make my bathroom sink sparkle before bed. It's my shiny sink, just as for most it's their kitchen sink.

  • My new habit I am planning on establishing this month is: Body Brushing. I have a Body Brush that I bought back in 199-something or other and have not consistantly used since my purchase following a skin care Sinposium. (spelled right?)
There are a variety of benefits to Body Brushing, one of them being glowing, exfoiliated, soft skin, not to mention the improved circualation of blood throughout your body and improve vascular system.
I am firm believer in taking care of your skin, b/c if you don't where are you gonna live? As an esthetician in a promient spa and salon in my area ppl look at my skin, so I am planning on taking care of the skin below my neck.
I have only done 2 days of body brushing and my elbows are getting soft and not ashy looking. That is one more step of before bed routine that I have nelgected, and I have deprived myself the pampering I need, so this is one habit that will not only pamper me but improve my vascular health...

  • I am adding sweeping my kitchen floor to my afternoon routine (in my control journal of course!!)
It's a great idea to prompt us to start a new habit each month - and to post them so we have ideas when we run out!!!

  • Dear Flylady, I actually have 2 new habits I want to reinforce, they are taking my vitamins, and walking on my treadmill for 30 minutes everyday. I have high cholesterol and want to try to get it down with exercise instead of medication. Plus I never take vitamins and know I should. This is part of my "staying alive in 2005" regime.

  • My DH and I are two days into our new routine - a brisk walk each evening while the kids do the after dinner routines. This serves two important purposes: it allows us to move our big fat frannies, and it gives us adult time to catch up at the end of the day without interruptions from our 2 DSs and 2 DDs. Two days down, only 26 more to go before it's a habit!

  • I have a bad habit that needs to stop. I bite my nails, and have done so since I was very very small. My mother's example was constantly there for me to follow. I was able to stop for a while, and then was getting the fake nails at the salon while working in an office. I stopped doing that after a while, and was able to keep my nails looking ok. I have since fallen back into the habit of biting them, and it is getting worse again. My 2 yo daughter doesn't need to start my bad habit, and my customers don't want to see my product in some bad looking hands. So I am going to practice keeping my hands away from my face completely except for putting on makeup and washing it off.

  • It seems corny but I am going to establish the habit of making my bed the minute I get out of it. The shiny sink is wonderful and my laundry is totally under control but the bed sometimes gets left unmade. Thanks for the encouragement!

  • Marla and Crew,
My husband and I have been looking into preschools recently. We have 2-year-old twins, and education is very important to us. While our kids already know a lot, and we, by no means, desire to push them to learn too much too fast, we want them to look at learning as something that is fun while being something that is valued. We have also looked into homeschooling our children. This past week, after looking at different options, we have decided to homeschool them. Our new habit is going to be to spend 15 minutes with each of our kids 2x a week 'home pre-schooling' them. As their need for real school grows, so will our time. We believe this will set solid foundations for where we will go in the future when schooling will be something which consumes more time.

  • Dear FlyLady,
I have developed a new habit and LOVE IT!!! I used to let my DH’s clean dress shirts pile up till I had time to iron and/or “fluff out the wrinkles” in the dryer. (You can imagine how often that was – whenever he ran out of shirts!!) No more. Now when I take the laundry out of the dryer to fold it (while my kids are taking a bath in the evening) I toss the shirts back in for a few minutes. Since I am folding and putting away laundry anyway, it doesn’t seem like a chore to take them out and hang them up and actually put them in the closet!! I always keep my laundry up (thanks to my “FlyLady” laundry routine), but now my DH always has plenty of clean shirts and I am amazed at how much he really appreciates it.

  • This month I am going to focus on making my bed as soon as I get out of it, and keeping it clear of the "stuff" that usually gathers on it. In the past my bed has been one of my worst hot spots. Being single, it didn't seem to matter that half of my double bed was often stacked with clothes, magazines, papers... Thanks to FlyLady, I've realised that I'm not doing myself a favour by keeping it this way. I sleep better if I have the whole bed to spread out in, and don't need to worry about things falling off and getting trampled or broken (this really hit home a few nights ago when I managed to push my laptop off my bed in the middle of the night! Thankfully it wasn't damaged in the fall, but I am not going to let there be a next time. In future, the laptop goes out of the bed before I go to sleep). I am blessing myself by snuggling up in a freshly made bed instead of having to untangle the covers before I crawl in.

  • I have been flying (flapping?) since the first week of December, and it has made a big difference! I was already making my bed every day, but the shiny sink has definitely become a new habit! I think I’ve only missed one day when we were out late and had a sitter. My biggest improvement, though, has been weekly meal planning and shopping. I was constantly stressed about dinner, and had a defeated attitude (DDs don’t eat that many things,
DH is always working late, I have evening meetings, why bother). But now, I have established a routine of making my weekly meal plan after consulting the calendar for meetings, shopping only once a week, and buying only what I need. I now know how much milk I need for a week, and I have all the ingredients for 7 nights of healthy meals! No stress! In addition, I got rid of tons of stuff during the super fling, and feel such a sense of optimism!
So, for February, what can I add? Well, I must confess I like to get up very early and pad around the house in my pajamas and bare feet. Yes, this time is quiet and productive, but guess what? One of the kids gets up and I am still in my pajamas or trying to get my shower and dress at the same time I am feeding them breakfast and getting them ready for the bus. So, for February, I am going to do what Flylady says and get showered and dressed to the shoes before I come downstairs. I may still cheat and start the coffee pot (I have a real attachment to that part of my prior routine) but no more pajama mornings at the computer or with the newspaper!

  • Hello Flycrew!
Last month I climbed back aboard the Flywagon, 11 months after I fell off. My habits had fallen away and my house was once again in CHAOS. My first goal was to re-establish the habit of keeping my sink shiny, since that is Flylady's first babystep. "Go shine your sink!" I vowed to myself not to add anything else until I had kept my sink shiny for 31 days, so that I wouldn't feel overwhelmed and be tempted to jump of the Flywagon. I kept my promise. My sink has been shiny for 30 days and counting!
Last week I sat down to think about what new habit I wanted to establish next. I headed on over to Flylady.net to see what Flylady recommended and I decided to work on my bedtime routine. Before I fell off the Flywagon, I had a good routine established and followed it religiously. Luckily I had it written in my control journal, so I pulled it out and went over it. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I hadn't completely stopped doing a lot of what I have written down. So I fine tuned it to better suit my family's current needs and situation, and I am going to work on completing it every night in the month of February. Even though I am anxious to have my home back the way it was before I fell off the Flywagon, and I am tempted to add a few more habits this month, I really, really don't want to fall off the Flywagon again, so I am taking extra care and caution not to jump in too fast this time around. I keep reminding myself to take the babysteps that I have decided to take and not let my inner perfectionist get the better of me.

Thank you Flycrew for showing me the tools and teaching me how to use them. I can't even say that I feel like I am fluttering yet, but I am definitely starting to flap my wings.

  • School finally started again today here down under (8 weeks of summer holidays are over Christmas). My new habits for February are (there are two of them). Walk to school each morning. It's about 1.5km (bit under a mile), so DD walks that, and I walk double that - to get home again. A nice gentle bit of exercise, that starts both our days off with a bit of a perk.
My 2nd new habit is to follow my "after school routine". Over the holidays it's been a bit hard, because there's no 'routine' to our days. However, I want to help instill good after school habits into DD - homework, music practice etc before play. The best way I can do that is to follow my routine.
My after school routine is firstly supervising DD's after school routine (LOL). She has a list she has to follow to - empty her school bag, empty her lunch box, get changed, hang up her uniform, do her homework, do her music practice. My list also includes - sweep the floor, start (or continue) dinner, up date our finances program, bring in and put away the washing, 5 minutes hot spots.

  • I want to bless my heart and family from now on. 5 days a week, 15 minutes at a time, I want to move and do something great for my heart and family! I can do this!

  • My new habit is going to be putting my clothes for the next day into the bathroom before I go to bed, so they'll be ready for me after my morning shower.

  • I am a payroll SHE with two babies, and my new habit is going to be making my lunch every night as soon as I have finished cleaning up the kitchen after supper. I don't always do this because I am tired. But it's much easier to do it when I am not rushing out the door to get to work on time. The other reason I haven't always done it is because, when I make my lunch at night, I sometimes forget to bring it to work the next day. Thus I have made a list of the things I need to bring to work each morning and posted it inside one of my kitchen cabinets. The list includes lunch, briefcase, purse, wallet, cell phone... Before I leave the house each day I check the list. The first day after I posted the list I almost didn't look at it because I said to myself, "You have everything." But I did check it and sure enough, I was about to walk out the door with my lunch in the fridge. I guess that's two new habits! Making my lunch at night and checking my list in the morning!

  • I'm going to practice piano at least 15 min. as part of my evening routine. I've played piano my whole life, but since having children six years ago, I've hardly sat down at all to play. Making music reminds who I am, so THANKS for reminding me I can play in baby steps instead of feeling like I couldn't practice because I didn't have a 2 hour block of time to myself.

  • I started FlyLady's program as a Lenten thing last year. I didn't think God was calling me to "give up" anything, but I thought maybe God wanted me to have more peace in my family and my life.
This year, for Lent and for February, my new habit will be to go to bed a little earlier. I work a lot of evenings, or have volunteer meetings, and I frequently don't get home form them until 9:30 or later. Then I'll still have to make lunches for tomorrow, finish my evenign routine (which takes about a half hour), and then I tend to flop in front of the TV for an hour before heading to bed, and then I read for half an hour before I'm asleep. So it's often 11:30 or midnight or later that I get to sleep, and I have to be not only awake but moving before 7 if I'm not going to be late for everything.
But I can feel it when I get less than eight hours sleep. I know a lot of people who can get by with less indefinitely, but not me. I get crabby and my work suffers, too. So, my new month, new habit, Lenten resolution will be to be in bed with the light out before 11 pm.

  • My new habit that I am going to enforce this month is,...... I am going to sit down after my bedtime routine and write out my to do list for the next day. This will consist of looking at my calendar for appoitments the next day. Identifying what my goal is for that day and what needs to be done to get er done! I know that I do best with a plan so I want to have a plan for the next day ready before the next day comes!

  • Last month I chose my new habit to be walking on the treadmill every day for at least 20 minutes. So far so good.
This month I am going to select lessening my consumption of Pepsi as my habit. I was raised drinking Pepsi for just about every meal. I can remember as a kid the Pepsi man actually delivered cases of bottled pop to my house every week. So to supplement my healthy walking I am going to try and cut Pepsi out of my daily routine.

    Thanks

  • My new habit is going to be smiling. I've found that I take a kind of pride in being a crumudgeon and a martyr, grumbling and complaining about everything, finding something irritating in the best days. But when I meet new people, they always like me and comment on how nice and friendly I am (I am NOT nice.) I think the reason is that I always want new people to like me, so I smile at them and try to be helpful and, well, NICE! So I'm going to try to smile at the people I usually grumble at, beginning with my kids.

  • Dear Flylady,
Ever since my son was born in October I have been telling myself that I need to start exercising again. Every day that I don't exercise I feel bad and vow to do so tomorrow. Your email about a new month and a new habit has inspired me to make an evening walk with my new son my habit for February. This will make for an even better bedtime routine for my son: a walk with mom, a story or two, breastfeed, change pants and off to bed. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • For years I have known that meditation would help bring peace to my life, but have yet to make it a regular habit. This month I am going to work on meditating every day - even if for only 5 minutes. Heck, Flylady syas you can do anything for 15 minutes, let's see if I can do "nothing". I think that meditation will be my next step in achieving peace in my life; it is easier now that there is peace in my home from routines.

Thank you for all you do!

  • Well having just passed my one year flybaby anniversary, I am still fluttering. But, I keep my sink shiny and that overflowed into keeping my kitchen counters clear & clean. I make my bed every morning and have made huge dents in decluttering but I still have trouble dressing to my shoes every morning and it's even harder because I don't usually pick out my & my sons' clothes the night before. So my new habit is my before bed routine to lay out our clothes for the next morning. Then I can work on 2 new habits because it is so much easier to dress to shoes when the clothes are just sitting there waiting to be put on!

Thanks for all the flywashing. Keep it up... I am a testimonial to how long it takes some things to sink in!
